Humility…One Slow Pitch At A Time

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008 | Sports

Happy Tuesday.

1. I am officially in my 30’s. We played softball again last night which aside from the loss, served as yet another stiff and obvious reminder that I am old(er) and more importantly, terribly out of shape.  I can no longer run. I can merely jog. I lack any and all explosiveness. If a ground ball forces me to move even half a step to my left or right, it’s takes all the power I have to get my body there which is usually a full second after the ball has passed.  And all that pathetic effort is usually accompanied by a heinous scream in which whatever is left of my masculinity is finally allowed to escape and seek refuge in another more capable athlete. Yesterday, while playing the outfield I trotted to a ground ball, bent over to pick it up and promptly fell over. Why? Because I am no longer able to run and bend at the same time.  Running and bending is something that an athlete should be able to do with ease.  More proof that I am NO athlete.

Here’s the thing, I’ve never been a great or even a good athlete. But I was at least a capable one. I may not have made the great plays, but I could at least be counted on to make the routine plays. I may not hit the home run, but I could at least be counted on to NOT FOUL OUT IN SLOW PITCH FUCKING SOFTBALL.

So, the “whip Fotis into shape 08′!” campaign is being pushed up a notch. Along with some of the other things I’ve been doing (jumping jacks! Pull Ups!), I will be incorporating jogging, shuttle runs and something yoga-y. This not being able to bend thing has me really worried.

If anything you’d win by a landslide, therefore boosting your ego tremendously.

Actually, I don’t even know how to score in tennis? I just like to wear cute little outfits and bat the ball around.

yoga is good, VERY calming. However, to build strength AND flexibility, try pilates. I recommend it highly!

It’s one thing to lose a softball game to grown-ups and another to be repeatedly upstaged in basketball by a six-year-old. Seriously. I’m 5′11.” I should be able to at least hit the backboard, especially when the kiddo guarding me comes up to my knees.

I look forward to a time when you, Togar, and I will do yoga in the living room at dawn every morning, the soft light of the rising sun streaming in through the open windows, a cool breeze caressing our sweaty, dewy skin as we simultaneously contort into various poses atop our mats.

The melodious voice of Enya will fill the room, as will the scent of lavender. Our bodies and minds will be awake and limber, and after a light breakfast and some green tea, we will go to our respective jobs with newfound confidence and inner peace.
