State Fair

Happy Thursday!
1. The State Fair starts today. As you read this, throngs of people are staring at obese pigs, eating anything (as long as it’s fried) and pretending to like each other. The truth is, I am a fan of the fair. In Illinois, the Fair is a downstate, hillbilly affair, so I never went as a child. And as far as people watching goes, it’s aces. Every year my eyes search for the woman wearing a t-shirt of kittens holding American flags. It has yet to happen, but It’s coming, I can sense it.
Maybe this year I’ll sit in the crowd for a newscast. Watching the anchors trying to be even folksier and “Minnesotan” than usual is always a treat. It’s like they’re all striving to force butter sculptures out their asses.

Driving through the fair traffic or living near the fair, however, is awful. Simply awful. Try the new Pig Lickers at the famous daves stand this year! Chocolate covered bacon on a stick is the new craze.
I believe I’m signing autographs tomorrow at 11am, so you can come by the WCCO booth and watch what happens when no one shows up to get the autograph of a TV person.

Jason will get PLENTY of autographs: WCCO IS the fair! Mike you are dead on! I describe the MN fair to my out-of-state friends as The Borg meets Green Acres…
I ended up watching a morning talk/variety show at the Fair by accident last year. I thought I was sitting down for some deep fried samples when the lights came up and my mom called and told me I was on TV. I didn’t want to leave and make the hosts feel bad, so I stayed for every forced smile and stale joke. We did get a bunch of fair food samples at least and I hung around to be the crowd shot in a bunch of promo spots. Which just proves I’ll do just about anything for free food.

Jason-That was the funniest thing I’ve read this week.

That’s funny - I’m always looking for the guy wearing a t-shirt with a walleye leaping over a howling wolf as Calvin pees on the Chevy logo. No dice yet. But speaking of, tell your brother to check out the excellent T-shirts on display at the Boone County, MO fair. Pit bulls and confederate flags, for reals.
I went to the Illinois State Fair only once. It was pretty much cows, pigs, corn & farmers. The Illinois 4H girls were pretty hot though.
